Do you have one of these?

Do you have a “problem area” in your yard where grass just won’t grow? Maybe the soil isn’t rich enough to sustain classic lawn grass, or it’s too hard to water in dry seasons. Nature has an answer to that: native prairie plants. Don’t work against this section of your yard; work with it. Introduce native prairie plants that prefer less-rich soil, are drought-tolerant, and support a network of pollinators all season long.

“By greening and transforming our landscapes, we can absorb carbon, reduce urban temperatures, provide habitat that supports pollinators and many other animals, create connections between larger patches of habitat that will allow pollinators to move through our communities—and native plants are the best way to do this.”

About
Marie

  • Hi! I’m Marie. My family and I live just outside Sun Prairie, where we’re slowly transforming our own once-neglected lawn into a native plant and pollinator oasis.

My passion for prairies began when I led a prairie conservation project in my community. The project widened my horizons of what was possible in a landscape and introduced me to a network of like-minded individuals who shared the love of native plants and their importance to the earth.

I guess I was destined to fall in love with prairies—I grew up obsessed with reading the Little House on the Prairie series and fell in love with the wide-open spaces that Laura Ingalls Wilder described.

Don’t be surprised if you see my son Will, age 6, working alongside me: he’s currently completing first grade at home and is shockingly good at plant identification.
